Mastering Healthy Aging

Small Changes for Big Improvements

Every second of every day we’re aging. That’s not some big downer statement, it’s just a fact. But establishing small yet impactful lifestyle choices can greatly improve our quality of life, making aging a positive experience.

Be Active

Moving our bodies is the number one way to unlocking better health. And walking is an excellent (wink, wink) first step. So plan 30 – 60 minutes each day to walk. Pick a good time based on your schedule and the season, and make it a habit. Before long you’ll feel more energized, clear-headed, and the physical benefits will absolutely follow. These include: increased heart and lung fitness, improved management of high blood pressure and high cholesterol, stronger bones, and even improved balance.

Eat Whole Foods

Addressing your diet doesn’t have to be a big ordeal. Start small by remembering this one tip: crowd out the bad stuff with the good. When you make sure your plate is full of fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains while also limiting processed foods, oil, sugar, and fatty meats, you are already eating healthier. Adding fiber is beneficial too. Fiber helps prevent constipation, cuts cholesterol, and protects your heart. After age 50, men should get 30 grams of fiber a day and women should aim for 21 grams

Get Enough Sleep

Often bouts of insomnia develop or worsen as we age. There are ways to help ensure sure you get the sleep you need. Turn off electronics like the TV, your cell phone, and computers at least an hour before you want to be asleep. Instead choose to pick up a book, practice some yoga, or write in a journal. Avoid drinking any caffeinated or alcoholic beverages in the later hours of the evening. Sip relaxing herbal tea or lemon water. And don’t over-nap in the daytime. A 20 minute nap should be your maximum.

Taking charge of your health as you age can seem daunting, but if you start with prioritizing these simple lifestyle choices, we believe you may feel even better than you ever have felt before!
