Dietary supplements can include vitamins, minerals, herbs, botanicals or amnio acids. Some of the more common supplements include multivitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D, magnesium, and probiotics. Dietary Supplements can be very beneficial to your health and can be used to address a number of symptoms and health conditions. They can also enhance your nutritional status and ensure you’re getting all the nutrients your body needs to function optimally. We use supplements in our office for a variety of things and believe in nutritional supplementation. But be sure to note however, that they are intended to supplement your diet, and are not a replacement for eating a healthy, whole food diet.
Just like with anything you would ingest, be sure to do your homework. Since supplements don’t go through an approval process like prescription drugs, companies don’t have to provide proof their products provide the strength of the nutrients stated on the label. Likewise, the FDA does not have the authority to review dietary supplement products for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed.
The USP is an independent, not-for-profit organization who sets federally recognized public standards of quality for supplements. Supplements with the USP Verified Mark verifies the contents of the label, but also that the supplement has met high-quality standards.
