What Does Alcohol Consumption Do To Your Body?

Alcohol stimulates the reward pathway in the brain and releases dopamine causing a feeling of pleasure which is one reason why it can be so easy to reach for more. Did you know that alcohol is a toxin in the body? This means , it takes priority for metabolization and elimination which in turn has an impact on many other functions in the body such as:

  • Hormones (cortisol, insulin, testosterone, estrogen, thyroid, and more)
  • Estrogen metabolism (breakdown and elimination)
  • Digestion (processing foods, constipation, diarrhea)
  • Elevates blood pressure
  • Increases physical stress on the body
  • Sleep (impacts the sleep cycles and sleep quality)

Additional food for thought: Food choices are usually different while drinking and the calories can quickly add up. This potentially can make an overall caloric intake for the day more than what your body needs. Over-consumption of food consistently can lead to gaining body fat and gut health issues. Gut health issues may show up as inflammation, decreased immune system strength, and skin issues.

Here are a few ways to help cut back alcohol consumption:

  • Mocktails can help you feel included in social situations and keep questions you may not want to deal with at bay. A few drink options can be:
    • Kombucha
    • Club soda and bitters with lime
    • Ask the bartender not to put the alcohol in the drink you order (ex: no vodka in the “vodka soda”)
  • It’s easier to reach for when it’s around so don’t keep any in the house during the time you are wanting to cut back or keep it out of your lifestyle altogether.
  • Make plans that do not center around it.
  • If alcohol is one of your ways to wind down from the day, this is a great time to find some alternatives that do not include it such as:
    • Going for a walk
    • Sipping on calming/sleepy time tea
    • Stretching
    • Yoga
    • Meditation
    • Adult coloring
    • Reading
  • Have a goal set for how many you are going to enjoy when you are drinking and be sure to alternate with water if it’s more than one to help with hydration.
  • Share your goal with your spouse, partner, or friends, to help keep you accountable.
  • Drink responsibly, especially if you have health concerns that you are trying to improve. If you are trying to lose body fat, alcohol will be a hindrance for you on your journey.
