At Foundations Medical Center, bloating is one of the most common GI complaints that we hear from patients. Bloating is not only uncomfortable and annoying, but it is also a sign that something is off balance in your body.
Bloating can be caused by several different factors. One of the most frequent contributors to bloat is diet. Bloating is a typical symptom of a food intolerance or allergy. Intolerances and allergies can cause excessive gas production or gas to become trapped in the gastrointestinal tract. The foods most likely to cause this are wheat or gluten.
Bloating may also signify that there is a hormone imbalance in the body. High estrogen and low progesterone levels can lead to water retention and bloating. Estrogen often acts as a fluid retaining hormone, while progesterone is a natural diuretic. Therefore, when these hormones are thrown off balance, you may notice bloating. This is commonly the cause of perimenopausal bloating.
Another bloating cause that we are able to diagnose is known as S.I.B.O. (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). SIBO is a condition that occurs when an excessive number of bacteria colonize the small intestine. Most of the bacteria in your digestive tract are located in your colon and large intestine. A small amount lives in your small intestine.
When something causes an imbalance in your gut (known as dysbiosis), the bacteria in your colon and large intestine can overgrow into your small intestine. This can wreak all sorts of digestive havoc, and soon turn into a whole-body issue.
Instead of dealing with bloating on a regular basis, let us take a whole body look at what may be causing this issue so we can help eliminate it. Through testing, we are able to identify the root cause of your bloating and treat it appropriately. Treatments vary depending upon the cause but oftentimes may include supplements, probiotics, antifungals, and dietary adjustments.
