Wellness Approaches for Preventing Development of Breast Cancer

Though breast cancer can develop due to unforeseen causes and genetics, there are also factors increasing your overall risk. So when it comes to cancer prevention we like to look at lifestyle modifications such as diet, exercise, and alcohol use. Focusing here can help you make empowered choices that will reduce your risk of developing breast cancer and boost your health overall.

Increase Cruciferous Veggie Consumption

There’s no doubting the health benefits of eating more fruits and vegetables - namely their abundance of phytonutrients and fiber. But cruciferous vegetable intake specifically appears to help prevent cancerous tumors. Cruciferous veggies to enjoy include broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, kale, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts.

Decrease Alcohol Consumption

Drinking alcohol is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. To reduce risk, limit alcohol consumption and try to allow days in between drinks for the liver to detox. Limiting your intake to no more than 2-3 drinks per week is advised.

Decrease Consumption of Sugar and Simple Carbs

High insulin levels are a big risk factor for breast cancer. The preventative solution is to cut out the amount of simple carbs and sugars you include in your daily diet.

Increase Regular Exercise

Physical activity reduces overall breast cancer risk. We know fat cells make estrogen. Too much estrogen in the body can cause hormone receptor positive-breast cancers to develop. Getting your body moving 4-5 days a week for 45 minutes will burn fat and have multiple health benefits even beyond reducing breast cancer risk.
