3 Reasons Why SPF is Important
The idea of a warm sunny day, relaxing by the water is something we all dream about. But staying protected from the harmful rays is not something we typically think about while spending a day in the sun. Too much sun can lead to sunburns, wrinkles, and can increase your chance of skin cancer. One of the best ways to prevent these issues is by protecting yourself with SPF lotions, clothing, and staying out of the direct sunlight for extended periods of time.
Did you know that you are still at risk in the winter and overcast days to harmful rays? Dermatologist highly recommend that we wear SPF daily, on any exposed skin. Fortunately, for us, a majority of dermatologist-formulated moisturizers have SPF in them, so you don’t have to worry about applying sunscreen to your face before leaving the house everyday.
Finding Your Perfect SPF
It is important to find a good moisturizer (most have an SPF option). Depending on your skin type, different products will work better than others. If you aren’t sure what type of skin you have, ask a professional. A dermatologist can look at your skin and tell if you naturally have an oily, dry, combination, or a sensitive skin tone. There are also many websites with questionnaires that can give you the same results from your home, just be honest when filling out the questions!
Once you have determined your skin type, you can narrow your search of products. We suggest researching the products to ensure they don’t use harmful chemicals and toxins, sometimes hidden as a “fragrance”. Many brands offer different types of daily moisturizers, such as a CC or BB cream. They also have tinted moisturizers which are great for all of us who don’t want to wear makeup everyday! Moisturizers with 30 SPF or higher, have the most benefits. Once the SPF is mixed in with the moisturizer, it does dilute it, cutting the protection by almost half, so the higher SPF the better.
Benefits of a Facial Moisturizer with SPF
Since we have yet to find the fountain of youth, we encourage our patients to be proactive in their daily routines to stay young and healthy. Applying a daily moisturizer boosts hydration in your skin, prevents flaking and dullness, and creates a protective layer of moisture that lasts all day. It helps keep your skin plump and youthful with it’s anti-aging properties, depending on your product. By including an SPF in your daily moisturizer, it eliminates a step each morning, which helps ensure you get the SPF coverage you need.
Our top 3 reasons why SPF is important:
Skin cancer affects more than 3 million Americans each year! By wearing an SPF, you are reducing your chances of developing carcinoma of the skin.
It reduces your risk of wrinkles. When you wear a daily moisturizer with SPF you skin is able to retain more moisture which is depleted from sun exposure. When the skin is moisturized it is able to retain the ability to produce collagen, which can eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin will also appear dewier and more youthful.
It decreases your chance of irreversible skin damage such as age spots, dry skin, sagging or thin skin and of course wrinkles and fine lines.
